About the role
We are seeking an Innovation Director to take accountability for the development and delivery of the business acceleration support services specifically designed for the innovative businesses basing themselves at the new Innovation Centre being built on the University of Essex’s Knowledge Gateway. The Innoavtion Centre is designed to support job creation and build engagement between the University, early stage and growing businesses and to act as a catalyst for collaboration on the Knowledge Gateway. It will be a place where all can come together to collaborate, innovate and develop new products, processes and business ideas.
The Knowledge Gateway will provide over 30,000 sq ft of Grade A office accommodation complemented with a range of informal break out areas, business lounge, co working space, café, meeting and conference rooms.

What we're looking for
What are you like?
The key outputs for this role will be the facilitation of customer business growth, innovation development and commercial success and the engagement of the University’s academic and research communities. You will be able to help small business owners develop strategic plans for profit growth and assist them to engage on a University, regional and national level to support these aims. The ability to develop technology and sector focused third part support ecosystems and close partnerships to broaden the level of support that our customers can access, is essential for the role.
A focus on innovation, an ability to both challenge and inspire during coaching sessions and a passion for supporting companies to grow to their full potential is a must. You will be trained in Oxford Innovation’s proprietary business analysis and coaching tools which will assist you to use your extensive knowledge of core business functions to provide credible, engaging, pragmatic and effective support.
The successful candidate will have a proven track record in business; either working at senior director level within large corporates or as a small business owner themselves. Ideally, they will have a background in a relevant technology market sector where Research based innovation is central to successful business models, and have experience of working with Universities to aid SME growth. Whilst direct experience of providing quality business coaching to early stage businesses is favourable we would consider candidates with the inherent skills and aptitude to develop this capability within the role.
